I basically started VirtualDub in college to do some quick capture-and-encoding that I wanted done; from there it's basically grown into a more general utility that can trim and clean up video before exporting to tape or processing with another program. I released it on the web and others found it useful, so I've been tinkering around with its code ever since. If you have the time, please download and enjoy.
Be warned, there is a memory leak in the supplied IsXInputDevice() function: the VARIANT returned by IWbemClassObject::Get() needs to be freed with VariantClear() after the device string is checked. This is hard to notice if you just drop in the code, as it only triggers on device enumeration and that likely only happens on startup or when a device change notification is received. I only noticed it because I temporarily modified my device enumeration code to run in a loop to see how fast (or slow) the WMI-based check would be.

This license is commonly used for video games and it allows users to download and play the game for free. In some cases, ads may be show to the users.
Demo programs have a limited functionality for free, but charge for an advanced set of features or for the removal of advertisements from the program's interfaces. In some cases, all the functionality is disabled until the license is purchased. Demos are usually not time-limited (like Trial software) but the functionality is limited.
This software is no longer available for the download. This could be due to the program being discontinued, having a security issue or for other reasons.
One of the many errors users will experience while using VirtualDub regard the lack of codecs. So if someone wants to render a video and he doesn't have the right codecs for it, VirtualDub won't be able to render/process it. In this case, it seems that installing a codec pack will usually fix the problem, but if the .dll or specific missing codecs aren't featured in these codec packs, then one needs to look for it and download it separately. As expected, this can be pretty annoying and time consuming.

VirtualDub is a free and open-source video capture and video processing utility for Microsoft Windows written by Avery Lee. It is designed to process linear video streams, including filtering and recompression. It uses AVI container format to store captured video.[4] The first version of VirtualDub, written for Windows 95, to be released on SourceForge was uploaded on August 20, 2000.[5]
In 2009, the third-party software print guide Learning VirtualDub referred to VirtualDub as "the leading free Open Source video capture and processing tool".[6] Due to its "powerful"[7] versatility and usefulness especially in the field of video processing (see below), PC World has referred to VirtualDub as "something of a 'Photoshop' for video files",[8] PC Perspective recommends it for its low overhead,[9] and nextmedia's PC & Tech Authority particularly praises it for its Direct stream copy feature to avoid generational degradation of video quality when performing simple editing and trimming tasks and the fact that VirtualDub "offers several valuable features that other packages lack, and helps you get quick results without any fuss or patronising wizards".[10]
VirtualDub is recommended for use by professional computer and tech magazines, guides, and reviewers such as PC World,[8] PC & Tech Authority,[10] PC Perspective,[9] technologies guide website MakeTechEasier,[11] freeware and open source software review site Ghacks,[12] Speed Demos Archive,[7] as well as third-party professional video production companies,[13] and the creators of Wine (software).[14] Several hundred third-party plug-ins for VirtualDub exist,[15][16][17][18][19][20] including by professional software companies.[21][22] Furthermore, Debugmode Wax allows use of VirtualDub plug-ins in professional video editing software such as Adobe Premiere Pro and Vegas Pro.[23]
VirtualDub supports both DirectShow and Video for Windows for video capture. Capture features include capture to any AVI variant, audio VU meters, overlay and preview modes, histogram, selectable crop area, video noise reduction, auto stop settings (based on capture time, file size, free space, and/or dropped frames), and designate alternate drive(s) for capture overflow. VirtualDub can help overcome problems with digital cameras that also record video. Many models,[weasel words] especially Canon,[which?] record in an M-JPEG format incompatible with Sony Vegas 6.0 and 7.0. Saving AVI files as "old-style AVI" files allows them to appear in Vegas.
As a free and open-source video capture & processing program, VirtualDub can be installed on Windows (32-bit and 64-bit) computers straightforwardly, as well as on Linux and Mac OS X by using Wine. Some of you would like to take VirtualDub to deal with video editing. Although it's not a professional video editor, it can do amazing video editing works with its built-in functions like filter plug-in, powerful video processing capabilities.
